What Is a Makerspace — and Why Detroit Lakes Needs One

Have you ever had an idea you wanted to bring to life — but didn’t have the tools, space, or guidance to make it happen? That’s exactly what a makerspace is for.

A makerspace is a shared workshop where creativity meets community — a place where people can learn, experiment, and build.

Imagine a space filled with woodworking tools, crafting supplies, 3D printers, and more — all available for the community to use.

Across the country, makerspaces have become creative hubs for artists, inventors, students, and lifelong learners. They’re places where ideas take shape, where skills are shared, and where collaboration sparks innovation.

Here in Detroit Lakes, we’re working to bring that same energy home.

The DL Makerspace will be a welcoming space for people of all ages and skill levels — a place to gather, make, and learn together. Whether you’re turning a bowl, building a birdhouse, or trying a new craft for the first time, you’ll find tools, community, and inspiration under one roof.

We’re still early in the journey — awaiting nonprofit status and planning for construction — but the vision is alive and growing. This space will belong to all of us who believe in creativity, craftsmanship, and connection.

We’d love your input!

What kinds of classes, tools, or creative spaces would you love to see at DL Makerspace? Your feedback will help shape what comes next — from the tools we bring in to the workshops we host
